Small Towns of the Wairarapa – Driving to Martinborough from WLG

An hour “over the hill” from Wellington is an area called the “Wairarapa.” Also known as Wellington’s Vine Region, this section of the Southern North Island is quintessential NZ with its small towns. Although I only stopped through Featherston, Greytown & Martinborough, here are the attractions and shops all the locals are raving about!

Unique jewelry in Mr. Feather’s Den

Featherston:

  • Mr. Feather’s Den – Oddities & Delights. From taxodermy to unique NZ art pieces, this is a must do stop to stretch the legs!
  • C’est Chesse –  Artisan Cheese & Deli. Stock up before you get to the vineyards!
  • Wits End – Crystal Shop. Need I say more?
  • Ferret Bookshop – Bookstore including second hand books. Always worth a browse.
Hot coco at a Greytown cafe

Greytown:

  • Schoc Chocolates – Small chocolatier, definitely worth grabbing a bar or 2 to bring home with all your wine.
  • Artisan Cafes – Stopped for breakfast but had plenty of choice on Main Street!
  • Boutique Shopping including art galleries. From home decor to everyday wear, I loved the vintage shops.

Carterton:

  • Paua World
  • Stonehenge Aotearoa
  • Gladstone Vineyard

Masterton:

  • Queen Elizabeth Park
  • Pointon Collection
  • Loopline Vineyard

That is “the hill” you drive over so Wellington is on the other side!

Lake Ferry:

  • Lake Ferry Hotel – Enjoy a drink at sunset for an amazing views over Palliser Bay.

TIP: The nice thing about all of these small towns is they are no further than 20 minutes away from each other. Be sure to keep your phone charged when you are driving to be able to take all the Instagram worthy photos along the route!
