Markets, especially Farmers’ Markets, have a special place in my heart. I love supporting local & small business, along with buying more organic in-season fruits and veggies. When traveling I love being able to stop at a local market. Since moving to Otago I have had the chance to go to almost all the weekend markets. Depending on what day you are around and what you are looking for, decide which market is best for you:
Cromwell Farmers’ & Craft Market: Sunday’s from 9am-1pm. Located in Old Cromwell, there is parking but it can get busy so expect to park in the neighborhood and walk. The market is mainly local crafts and art with food trucks and some produce. The closer to Christmas/height of summer the more fruit & veggies you will find.
Cromwell Food & Produce Market: Thursday’s from 11am-2pm in the carpark between 5 Stags & Super Liquor. Sadly I was unable to attend this one due to work.
Arrowtown Farmers’ Market: Sunday’s from 10am-2pm at the Library Green. Another primarily craft market, expect candles, seasonal decorations and flowers. Coffee truck with music. Park at the free lots by the river and walk up the hill to the small market.
Remarkables Market – Frankton: Saturday’s from 9am-2pm. This is my favorite market in the region! With at least 40 stalls every weekend, there is an array of produce, household goods and food to order. Free parking, dogs are allowed on leashes.
Queenstown Craft Market: Saturday’s 9-4:30 in summer and 9-3:30 in winter. Lots of photography, pottery and handmade soaps. Located right on the water at Earnslaw Park.
Wanaka’s Craft Market: Sunday’s from 10-3pm. Many of the same artists from the Queenstown Craft Market plus a few others. Jewelry, cards and wood products. Just downtown in the park across from Patagonia’s Chocolate.
Wanaka Farmers’ & Artisan Market: Thursday’s from 12noon to 4pm. More produce including bread, cheese, dog treats and honey. Same location as the craft market.
Alexandra Friday Food & Produce Market: Friday’s between 11am-2pm at Pioneer Park. Very small but great local food options from homemade pasta to cheese & nuts.
TIP: Come prepared to shop with a re-useable bag.
