Summer in Auckland means lots of events outside! What better way to enjoy the night than seeing a movie under the stars?

American Express Open Air Cinemas are located in Western Springs, close to the Zoo and walking distance from my flat. My partner and I got tickets to ‘Free Solo’ and were excited to see this film and check out what this arena had to offer.

We got VIP tickets for $35 NZD which included the movie, bean bag, pillow, blanket, 1 drink, popcorn and ice cream. Well worth the value, they even offered ‘bean bag service,’ where you just had to raise your hand and an attendant was there to take your order.

The movie started at 9 so we got there around 7:30 to claim our seats. We enjoyed watching the sun go down and the stars come out!

For $15 you could just get entrance to the movie and then can buy drinks and food as you like. Even better, you can bring in your own beverages (just no booze) and snacks! Most groups of friends brought their own beanbags or chairs and coolers of sodas with bags of chips and M&Ms.

We ended up ordering pizza and it was delicious. A personal pan was between $15-20 depending on what was on it. I got a vegan one and was super impressed!

The movie itself was really good. A little stressful, considering how dangerous it was, but also very interesting to learn more about the person behind the climb. We were super comfortable in our bean bags. I even caught myself looking up at the stars every now and then!

Right before the movie started we received our ice cream and freshly popped popcorn. We would recommend this event to anyone, and plan on going to another!

Tip: Bring an extra blanket as it gets cold once the sun sets.

Have you been to an outdoor theater? How was it?
