Day Trip to Cabo San Lucas

Water Taxi to Hole in Rock

Cabo San Lucas is a popular destination for Spring Breakers, Senior Trips, Honeymooners, and day trips from Todos Santos. The town itself is very touristy, as you would find Cancun or Nassau, Bahamas. What it does have is clear water and some amazing mountain views.

Start of the Water Taxi Ride

When we first arrived to Cabo via car we drove around to find a parking lot. We found one that was about 2 blocks back from the main street where all the bars, restaurants and hotels are off the water. We stopped for food at “The Office” and got seated on the beach. Drinks were a little pricey but the food options came in large sizes. While we were enjoying the view we were haggled by at least 10 people, so beware.

Sea Lions!

After lunch we walked along the beach and looked for jet-ski rentals. We looked up good prices and found that $80 USD for an hour was going to be the best deal. We had to barter with 3 jet-ski “sales-reps” before getting $180 USD an hour for 2 jet skis (for 4 people) and a trip on a water taxi. We paid them in cash however they still scanned our card for a deposit in case we damaged the jet ski. It was just as a rental car because we walked around the jet ski together and documented any damage before we went out. They told us how to work the jet ski and held onto our bags. One guy lead us out into the Ocean and then called us back after an hour. To be honest, that was one of the most fun hours we had in Mexico. We raced our friends, fell in the water (with our required life-vests) and saw sea turtles. There was a screen which read our speed and gas level… we started with a full tank, went up to 70 kmph and finished with a half tank.

Gateway to the Pacific

When we got back to shore, our bags were safe with all of our belongings and we hopped on the water taxi. Yes, we were a little hesitant to leave our bags, but we didn’t have time to bring them back to to car. Looking back, the jet-ski owner would want to watch our stuff for several reasons:

  1. Tips, I advise tipping them before you leave so they keep an extra eye on your bags
  2. It shows residents of Cabo are respectable people and thus you will return for another trip
  3. It brings return business to the jet-ski owner if we knew others at a close by resort

Pelicans

The water taxi driver took us to see sea lions and pelicans, or as he called them “Mexican Turkeys.” The boat had a glass bottom, meaning we could see into the water. We threw some bread at fish, including Mexican pirañas. He then brought us to the “Gateway to the Pacific,” and Hole in Rock.

He was going to drop us off at a beach that you could only reach by water taxi, but it looked very crowded with more hagglers. Before we loaded on the boat we did get some waters and beers, however we decided our trip was complete as we hit all the main spots and thus we could head back to Todos Santos.

Tip: If you are scared about losing your items, get a portable safe. You can hang it anywhere and know your cell phone, wallet and sunglasses will be save while you are riding around on jet skis!
